ATHLETE EXCELLENCE

SUPPORT ELITE ATHLETES HOLISTICALLY

Empowering athletes to be their best requires a comprehensive view of health – going beyond the athletic achievement we all celebrate to also recognize and support critical areas like mental health, education, financial well-being, legal rights and personal expression that play a vital role in athlete excellence.

Excellence doesn’t happen overnight. It’s years of dreaming, discipline and training. Under all the pressure, expectations and awe-inspiring achievements, athletes are people first and foremost.

The USOPC reflects on 2021 knowing we progressed and lived our commitment to championing athlete well-being, on and off the field. Through this approach, Team USA athletes thrived while achieving competitive excellence in the face of unprecedented challenges.

Despite a year-long postponement, Team USA led all nations at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 with 113 total medals and 39 golds, and placed fourth overall at the Paralympic Games with 104 total medals, finishing third in gold-medal count with 37 top finishes. Overall, 386 Americans returned home with medals and every member of Team USA delivered inspiring performances that made our nation proud. This achievement is a testament to Team USA’s perseverance and to the USOPC’s mission to empower Team USA athletes to achieve sustained competitive excellence and well-being.

“[It makes me feel so lucky] to know that the USOPC and our National Governing Bodies are here, not only to help us on a path to excellence in sport, but that they also care about who we are as individuals. They want to make sure that our life after sport is good and that we're going to have resources available to us.”
